The Brooks Glycerin line has long been a go-to for runners looking for a good balance of comfort, cushioning and stability. The Glycerin 22 continues those aspects of the shoe but features a few updates to improve the ride.
The biggest of those is an updated midsole made from the brand’s new DNA Tuned foam, the same used in the Brooks Glycerin Max, that combines larger foam cells in the heel for a softer landing and smaller cells in the forefoot for increased energy at toe-off.
The Brooks Glycerin Max takes the fundamentals of the popular Glycerin line and beefs up the midsole with the brand’s newest foam, DNA Tuned. Made from dual-cell technology, DNA Tuned is a nitrogen-infused foam made up of large cells in the heel to provide soft, comfortable landings with smaller cells in the forefoot to promote a response toe-off.

Hey Tommy from the r testers in this Video we are going to be comparing the Brooks Glycerin 22 and the Brooks Glycerin Max let's take a [Music] Look the Brooks Glycerin at 22 costs £165 or $165 it weighs 297 G or 10.5 Oz for men In the size 8 and the drop is 10 mm the Brooks Glycerin Max costs £180 or $200 It weighs 313 G or 11 oz for men in a Size 8 and the drop is 6 [Music] Mm the Brooks Glycerin line has long Been a go-to for runners looking for a Good balance of comfort cushioning and Stability the glycerin 22 continues Those aspects of the shoe but features a Few updates to improve the ride the Biggest of those is an updated midsole Made from the Brand's new DNA tuned foam The same used in the Brooks Glycerin Max That combines larger foam cells in the Heel for softer Landings and smaller Cells in the foref foot for increased Energy at toe off theu also features a New engineered double jacked knit upper To improve the comfort and fit as well As a thick layer of outso rubber to Improve grip and durability the Brooks Glycerin Max takes the fundamentals of The popular glycerin line and beefs up The mids soole with the Brand's Newest Foam DNA tuned made from jeel cell
Technology DNA tuned is a nitrogen Infused foam made of large cells in the Heel to provide soft comfortable Landings with smaller cells in the for Foot to promotee a responsive toe off That midsole combines with Brooks's Noticeable Glide roll rocker that pushes The foot forward to promote a smooth Heel To Toe transition there's also a Thick rubber out soole to both protect The midell foam and deliver a high level Of grip as well as a plush engineered Mesh upper to ensure plenty of comfort For a variety of Runs comes the fit of the two shoes I've Got my normal uk9 in Bow shoes which is A us10 with Brooks and they both fit me Really well I've got no complaints at All about the feat to enough room in the Toe box without having too much room Good hold around the heand midf you know Lots of padding at the back of the shoe There but I didn't find it oppressive or Irritating in anyways and it does Provide obviously the classic Brooks Step- in comfort so yeah all around I Was very happy with the fit of both Shoes in my normal running shoe size Quick word on fit then and I ran in my Regular Brooks running shoe size which Is a UK 8 and A2 both of these shoes I Think have an excellent fit they've got Roomy toe boxes here I've got the Glycerin 22 there's plenty of room
Towards the end lots of wiggle room in The toe box the upper Flex nicely they Hold Around the kind of toe Knuckles well Without feeling too tight and pinching Big fat tongues take the lace pinch off I do get a little bit of bold from the Tongue there I have to watch out how I'm Lacing down the laces here back into the Heel colors they held really well I feel Well supported they're nice and plush if You go over onto the glycerin Max as Well I've got a little bit more room Actually lengthwise and this does feel Like a more spacious toe box which I Think is really good because this is the Kind of shoe you're probably going to Run slightly longer this has got Ultra Shoe potential for me in terms of that Roomy toe box fit again good laser lock Down across the midfoot nice hold into These big padded heels ample tongues Really nice fit super comfortable really Disappearing big thumbs up so in terms Of fit it's been very good overall for Me in both of these shoes I've got them Both in a UK size 8 and that is my Typical running shoe size I be sticking To going true to size in both of these Shoes now the gliter in Max only comes In a standard width option you get a few More options on the gliten 22 but my Skinny fee I think going for you know I've had no problems with the glycerin
Max it's it's naturally a very Accommodating and Broad fitting shoe and It's the same story for the glycerin 22 I think you're getting similar kind of Levels of room in the toe boxes the Midfoot hols are very similar the lacing And the tongue combos you know similar In terms of that kind of padding and Comfort on the top of your feet heel Collars similar amount of padding again I think you're getting a little bit more Internally on the um gin 22s if you like The idea of a little bit extra support I Think maybe getting that there on the Gin 22 other I probably mention is when You look at those Hill colors and you at Where you know the areas around the Achilles I think it's a little bit more Narrow on the glycerin Max which I have Found at times has slightly irritated my Achilles not massively uh been Problematic throughout my runs but has Something I've noticed particularly Compared to the softer feeling one and a More accommodating one on the glisten 22 But in general I think going through Deciding both these shoes to be fine That's what I found and again as I said I've had this in the standard width fit Option and and you the one size you're Getting in the GL Max so i' be going you Size in both so the fit for me in these Two shoes very good in both Brooks is Normally pretty good when it comes to
Fit uh and they make shoes that are a Little bit more accessible for people You don't tend to have to worry a lot With Brook shoes when it comes to them Being a little bit thin or the being Lack of space in the for so both of These shoes the glitchin 22 is plenty of Space before the big toe for me in this Shoe and around the side of the big Fooot it has a really nice upper uh not Too stretchy but quite relaxed fit so Definitely designed to give you a lot of Room in that 4 foot uh and there's a lot Of padding around it as well uh it's a Very plus shoe it's a shoe that's really Designed to give you a nice level of Comfort from from the get-go um but also I'll say that it's a shoe that could you Nice level of lock down as well so even Though it's quite a relaxed comfortable Fit this bid foot really holds the shoe In place so it's a very uh stable Comfortable shoe to wear uh and should Be good for a lot of people um who are Looking for a solid all around shoe um When it comes to comfort the Brooks Gliter Max very similar um Brooks is Very good at making shoes that a lot of People can use uh comfortably plenty of Space in the forefoot maybe a little bit More for me before the tow than the 22 But not loads and plenty around the side As well again very nice lock down fit in This shoe and lots of padding maybe a
Little bit more padding than the Glitchin 22 um but all in all definitely Stay to my UK size 8 in both of these Shoes span very comfortable shoes and Very much what you'd expect from the Brooks line of cushion Shoes so in testing I've logged around 30 mi in the new glycerin 22 close to 50 Mi in the glycerin Max and I have to say I'm really enjoying where Brooks is Going with these shoes I think we've got Two good shoes here the glycerin Max is Definitely a bit of a depart from what We' usually expect from Brooks who play It safe normally but both of these shoes I think do a good job at their intended Aims for me the glycerin 22 is a capable Versatile shoe that's nicely balanced This is an ax Joel Nimbus 27 soft and Fans of that really soft ride might find That they want more kush for their Easiest of runs but I think it's still Nicely soft and I'll happily trade some Of that really top level plushness Underfoot for a shoe that can go up Through the gears a bit because it feels A bit lighter on the foot and the Glycerin 22 definitely offers that I Think Brooks has made a good Dependable Daily trainer definitely a shoe that can Rival the lik to the new balanc 1080 v14 The SOP ride 17 the Nike Pegasus 41 and Using that bracket now the glycerin Max Is a surprised hit for me I thought I'd
Struggle with a whopping great midsole Like this but I think it's one of the Better massive stack Max cushion running Shoes and a great option for easy day Miles and cruising as well if you're a Heavier Runner this could definitely be One to look at now I've done a lot of Miles in it on very tired beating up Legs and there's kind of cocooned Protective Comfort here you can get that From cheaper Rivals but I feel some of The comparable heavier soft shoes can Feel like they're dragging you down a Bit where the glycerin Max I think Offers up some energy particular when You roll onto that kind of smaller cell DNA tuned for foot for a springy toe off Now some Runners might find they can Pick up the pace in this shoe too and I Definitely think many Runners will be Able to use this shoe for longer mid Pace range runs for a big stack they're Not overly sinky while some Max cushion Shoes you know they get a bit sludgy and A bit labored I think this one still has A nice response to it as's a control to The platform now Brooks is known for its Stability and you still get that here Too from a big Max ta shoe but for me Overall there's a bit too much shoe a Bit too much weight to want to do much More than my easier miles in the max now When this shoe came out what I was Intrigued and what I said in the other
Review was I wonder if Brooks took the Dnh2 phone where they go with it next Because I think it works I was wondering If you could get a similar ride out of Leack and the Gin 22 kind of answers That question and I think the answer Mainly is yes but more on that in the Verdict so in terms of my running time In these two shoes I've done well over 50k in both I would say I've done more In the GL Max simply because I've had it Longer I've spent more time in the shoe Post our multitest viiew from last year I would say these are both long run shoe Candidates very strong ones at that you Know if you are looking for something That you know is very comfortable very Protective and very stable then these Are two shoes that kind of really fit That Criteria they do share some similarities They're not super light shoes I mean This is you know the drops are slightly Different but they are heavy shoes and You know for me the glit max is the Heavier of the two so in terms of being Agile shoes they aren't super agile Shoes but what I would would say is that You know they share that DNA tune with So foam which is you know not super Plush not super firm it's kind of Somewhere in between what that delivers Is some moderate bounce not super Aggressively bouncy um kind of you know
Sensation or ride but I think you know When you get that on both of the shoes But you also get a slightly more Pronounced rocker in the glycerin Max You just roll through a little bit Quicker from Hill to toe in the glycerin Max and what I think that allows on the GL Max is to be better suited to kind of More moderate Paces I think or more Steady Paces I still think it is a easy Run kind of relaxed run shoe where you Want that protection that maximal Protection but I do think I found Compared to the Gin 22 which again I Have been able to run a little bit more At my moderate Pace in I think it works Better to do that in the G Max because Of that more pronounced rocker that You'll getting in the glycerin Max I Think other things to talk about here Out Soo durability out Soo grip I think The grip is very good in both of these Shoes I think maybe it's slightly better On the gist Max these are shoes i' would Be sticking to Road and Pavements I Wouldn't be going kind of heavier Trails I think they can handle that I think It's enough in terms of that traction to To be you know Well Suited in those kind Of off-road kind of routes but I think You know you keep you're sticking to Roads and Pavements that's where they're going to Work best and I think what they also do
With that extra Rubber and where the Position is that it adds that kind of Naturally stable feeli that you're Getting from both of these shoes so for Me I do think these are good long run Shoes I do think these are shoes that Are very controlled and stable to run in I do think when it comes to adding a Little bit more versatility to your Sessions I think the Gin Max despite Being the heavier of the two shoes for Me does just give you a little bit more On that front but I do think you know The glycerin 22 can do a little bit of That as well it just feels more at home For me doing that in the glycerin Max so Two good brick shoes two good cushioned Shoes that I think are good for for easy Moderate kind of steady paced runs so Three or four years ago if we were Talking about the glycerin range we Would be calling them Max cushion shoe Uh and it would be one of the big Cushioned options out there now it's Pretty much a daily shoe when you look At the stack height uh of most of the Shoes within within this category it's Not a it's not a massive Max stack shoe Anymore whereas the Brooks glycer Max Has a bit more stack to it is a bigger Shoe uh and is designed for that new World of people that want more and more Cushioning um the big difference between These two shoes um they both have the
DNA tuned Midsole uh the glycerin 22 what I've Actually found is that Mido even though Uh the foam is new uh and it's meant to Be a little bit bouncier a little bit a Little bit softer it doesn't have a Massive change for me from the previous Version of the shoe so when you've got This level of uh this ml in a shoe it Still feels relatively balanced to me Very stable Midol foam uh very Comfortable to wear takes a lot boxes Which is essentially what the previous Versions or last last couple of versions Of the glycerin have done um it is very It's a nice ride to it it's um Definitely a shoe that a lot of people Can use but really for me it really Comes down to that nice bit of stability You get in it as well it's not designed As a stability shoe but Brooks generally Make shoes which are always pretty Stable anyway um the Brooks Glycerin Max Uh now even though it's the same midell Phone because there's more in it I think There's a little bit it works best this Foam works best with this level of Midol Foam in it so you get a little bit more Um softness in it you get a little bit More bounce and it's definitely a shoe That's more conducive to running a bit Faster in um which is strange because It's a bigger shoe um but that midell Foame is really good for that uh and
Definitely gives you a bit back it Compresses quite nicely and gives you a Little bit of energy that it's not the Bouny shoe in the world but it Definitely gives you a little bit more B Than you get the glycerin 22 but still It's a very stable shoe so um even Though it's got this big stack of foam Still it's it's probably one of the most Stable Max Big Max stack shoes you can Get um the other thing I would say as Well about these two shoes is that Glen 22 it has a nice rolling action to it But nowhere near as good as the Brooks Um glycerin Max I think the glycerin Max Just has a a better uh geometry for Rolling your foot forward uh and as a Result it's much more conducive to those Longer distance training sessions I if I Was doing uh marathon training and I was Going out and doing like a 30k run at a Comfortable pace which for me which Would be about 5 minute kilom this would Be a really nice shooter doing it just Rolls you forward nicely gives you a Nice bit of softness still very stable When your legs get tired you're not Worried about wobbling around in this Shoe um but it's definitely a shoe That's more conducive to those longer Comfortable runs um it's not an amazing Shoe for Interval sessions or anything Like that I definitely won't say it's The most versatile shoe in the world
When it comes to all types of runs but It's definitely a good shoe uh if if You're looking for longer training Sessions um and you want to run at a Consistent pace and not just a really Easy Pace um but I would also say that It's a better shoe when it comes to easy Runs as well because you got that more Uh that more stack in it a little bit Softer ride to it it's definitely a shoe That I would pick up a lot more for Those type of runs as well so it's more Versatile at a certain level of the Spectrum for me uh whereas the glycerin 22 um it's it can do all of those things Uh but for me I just think it's just Just less versatile overall um great Easy day shoe great daily training shoe But I think um it just it it doesn't Have that long run smoothness for me Which I really want um from when I'm Doing marathon training and the glycerin Max has that so quite simil the shoes in A lot of ways but I just think that the The foam uh this DNA tuned foam works Better when you've got more of it in the Shoe and that's why I really like the um Brooks Glycerin Max also the outso on These shoes is both very very good um Always been very impressed with the Outsole on the glycerin range uh Glycerin 22 fantastic really big chunky Layer of rubber on that outsole uh not a Lot of exposed Mell foam in there um and
It's been I've using this quite a lot on Um public foot paths and gravel tracks And things like that and it works really Really really well no issues with grip At all same with the Brooks lerin Max Really nice level of rubber on it Slightly less overall than the glycerin 22 um and a little bit more exposed Midsole here but I think this DNA tune Seems to be pretty durable as well I've Not seen any major signs of wear on them Uh but really solid outside rubber on it No issues at all definitely use it for Lots of type of runs public pass and and Gravel pass as well so solid outsa on Both of these shoes so I've done around 60 to 70k in both of these shoes and the Glycerin 22 is very much a continuation Of the line it's a shoe line I've liked For a long time and I like the glycerin 22 as well but it's not a big departure From the standard glycerin line whereas The glycerin Max I think is something Quite new and that really mostly comes Down to the geometry in the shoe despite The fact you know there's a lot going on With this new foam which you know is a Good foam it feels pretty good on the Foot but I really think the change you Get with the glycerin mats compared to The other glycerin shoes is very much The geometry with that higher stack Lower drop and you know that noticeable Rocker which is you very much placed
Right at the front of the 4ot there and Say as a result of that geometry you do Get a smoother ride and it feels a bit Livelier the glycerin Max it almost Feels like the you know faster livelier Shoe than the glycerin even though it's A bit heavier you've got that huge stack There it is a shoe that's mostly focused On Comfort I'd say both of these shoes Mostly Excel there rather than anything Else like versatility you do get a Really nice comfortable landing at the Heel nice move rocker and then the Slightly firmer feeling under the Forefoot to give you a little bit of Extra responsiveness Al you got the same Foam setup in the glycerin 22 but with The higher drop the standard glycerin Kind of silhouette it feels very much Like the glycerin 21 to me in that you Know you're kind of snapping through It's comfortable lots of Squish at the Heel like it's a really comfortable shoe For heel Strikers like myself then you Get moved onto that 4ot which does feel A fair bit thinner than the one on the Glycerin Max and you've got a far Snappier ride transition rather than the Smoother rocker on the glycerin Max so I Used the glycerin Max for a nice range Of runs and I was hoping it could be a Pretty versatile Sho I did take it out For a tough 30k progression run with the Last 10K being you know at a fairly
Decent pace and by the end of that you Know I was put off the shoe as a Versatile shoe it's not one that's going To go out there and rival big high stack Super trainers like the super blast or Anything like that this is a shoe that I Would very much stick to easy Paces in Myself you know you can do but of Everything you know newer Runners those Who don't get on with kind of plated Super trainers that kind of thing you Know you've got a fairly largely ride Here but it's a heavy shoe and it's a Big shoe and the geometry although I do Think it is set up a bit better for fast Running sometimes than the glycerin 22 Doesn't really help it that much like It's still not giving you a really Explosive ride or anything like that so It's a shoe that I think is built to Rack up a lot of miles in Comfort with a Nice smooth transition a nice easy ride To it and it does that well but you're Paying a lot of money for that and I Think the glycerin 22 does all those Things really well as well just with That different ride feel so I've done a Range of runs in the glycerin 22 as well Kind of standard easy daily training you Know a long run as well in this shoe and You know just ticks over well for me Like it works better at slower Paces for Me I find that it's a bit more Comfortable the way it transitions if I
Start to go faster in it get that Slightly slapper feel from the higher Drop which you don't get so much with The Gin Max so I think this is a more Comfortable shoe if you are pushing the Pace because of the extra 4ft cushion But I don't think it's necessarily A a Faster shoe than the glycerin 22 which Again is one that I would keep to easy Runs long runs that kind of thing but You know if you are looking for a big Cushion shoot a bit of everything both Of these can kind of do faster Runnings I think they'd both be pretty good first Marathon running shoes as well for People but neither of them really excels When it comes to p so I did do a run in Both shes at the same time and actually It is quite noticeable the different Ride F you get from the glycerin Max I Do think you've got that smoother ride Slightly poppier ride Lively ride it it Feels like the Nim shoe almost despite The fact being it's a lot bigger and it Is heavier than the glycerin 22 which You know feels very much like your Traditional 10 mm drop daily trainer Comfortable at the back snaps through Feels a bit thin under the foref foot Compared to this shoe But ultimately Just really gets the job done this does Feel different to the other shoes in Brooks's range and I think that is like I say down to Geometry more than
Anything this foam is pretty good like It does give you a comfortable ride at The heel slightly firmer feeling under The forefoot but I don't think it's a Big leap up what we've seen from DNA LOF V3 the Nitro infused foam that Brooks Has used in the past so this dual Density setup works pretty well but I Wouldn't say that's what really Differentiates these shoes from the Other shoes in the Brooks range it's Really just whether you prefer that I Think the rocker higher stack on the Glycerin Max compared to the more Classic High drop silhouette of the Glycerin 22 so my take whether you should go for The Brooks G 22 or the Brooks giten Max Now if I put this down to the shoe that I've enjoyed running in more it would be The glycerin Max now given that these Both share that new Brooks DNA tune Cushing technology I do think it's Better executed in the glycerin Max I Think it's good to have more of it as Well and I do think it maybe adds a Touch more versatility not a huge amount But a little bit more over the glan 202 now can you get a glycerin Max Experience in the glycerin 22 absolutely And I do think there's a bit more Versatility about the compared to the Previous glycerin but I think just how As I said it works in this shoe the fact
You're get a little bit more Rocket Ride Than the glycerin Max it just works to Be a more versatile shoe for me and i' Always take the more versatile shoe I Still think these are shoes I would use For easy runs long runs slightly more Moderately pasted runs but I think when It comes to doing that the one that kind Of works best at those particular Paces I think for me it would be the glycerin Max so if it was me I would be spending A little bit more money on the Brooks Glyer max box I do think you can get Some of this experience in the glycerin 22 which I don't think would have been The case if we were comparing the Glycerin Max to the glycerin 21 so yeah Definitely these shoes are a little bit Closer in terms of that experience but For me I'd be going for the Gin Max so My verdict on these two shoes um it's They both great shoes uh if they do what They say on the tin Brooks has really Started to uh do a good job but sticking What it knows best which is solid all Round shoes that give you a nice bit of Everything stability comfor for um Workhorse shoes that uh anybody can use They're really accessible if if you were A runner then you had loads of different Shoes these would fit nicely into Rotation as easy day shoes or uh daily Comfortable Trainers for me it really Comes down to the stack of midell foam I
Like softer shoes I like um lots lots of Stack in my shoes I like a bit of Bounce I like a nice smooth rolling action um And the Brooks Glycerin Max does that For me better than it does in the Glycerin 22 um it just works better for My style of running and definitely if I'm running longer distances I'm much More likely to pick up the glycerin Max Than the glycerin 22 I think the Glycerin 22 is a solid shoe still and I Think a lot of people would really enjoy Using that um but I do think the Glycerin Max um despite it high stack is Still a very stable shoe so it's still Very accessible to a lot of people who Want comfort and stability uh in their Shoes so I'm going for the glycerin Max All the way um cuz I think it's Superior Uh in every aspect and I really like the Glycin max I also like the glycin 22 a Lot as well I just think the glycerin Max um with this foam does a lot more Than the glycerin 22 so it comes to my Verdict like I do prefer the ride feel Of the glycerin Max I tend to prefer Rocket shoes I like the fact it's got a Lot of cushion there but it doesn't feel Like an overly cushion shoe or a brick Or anything like that it does roll Through quite smoothly get a fairly Lively ride under the forefoot and I do Think it's a more enjoyable running shoe For myself however I think when it comes
Actual performance there's not really a Lot in it these two shoes they really do I think the same kind of job and they do It pretty much equally well so really it Would just come down to what ride you Prefer if you if you do like the classic 10mm drop of the glycerin line and that Kind of thing I would just stick with The glycerin 22 it does the same job Really well we're even look for a deal On the glycerin 21 if you you know have Looked at other brands because Brooks Hasn't been offering a shoe like the Glycerin Max well it now is offered You've got that lower drop you've got That pronounced rocker got that really High stack it does a pretty good job as A cruiser but it's still not a shoe that I would really consider a very style Around or anything like that it's just a Different ride feel to the glycerin 22 So I think the choice would come down to What your preferred ride feel is and Also the price like the markup in the UK I think is slightly less than the markup In the US and i' be tempted probably to Pay the extra for the glycerin Max Myself cuz I prefer the ride field but Wouldn't say it's really worth that much More in terms of performance or anything Like that it really just a case of Whether you don't want the 10 mm drop on The glycerin 22 and it's a fair bit more Expensive in the US so if you're not too
Fuss about drop and not sure exactly What you even like in a running shoe and Just want a comfortable durable shoe to Rack up a lot of miles in I think both Of the shoes will do that job equally Well so I'd get the glycerin 22 I just Get the glycerin max if you do know that You prefer that Rocket Ride and aren't Really keen on the standard glycerin Ride do you think you get something Different here with the ging Max and is A ride feel that I prefer myself verdict Then and you've got two good shoes here I think they're both quite versatile but They break down like this if you want a More subtle balance of cushion stability Ground feel with a little agility and a More traditional shoe that's lower Profile feels a bit more versatile and The glycerin 22 I think is the one to go For if you like the more on Trend huge Wedge Max fact that puts a bigger Protective barrier between you and the Road the glycerin Max is probably the Way to go though I don't think the max Is all that much softer than the 22 but Because of the size the glycerin Max is Much better when you're running slower Miles up to cruising Pace than is at Going kind of faster faster miles there Is some faster potential but for me it's Just a bit too much shoe to do those Faster efforts the glycerin 22 is best At cruising around sort of marathon pace
It's got some comfort and cush for the Slowest miles too but it's not offering The same sort of levels of big stack Protection but I find it really well Balanced now at $200 or £180 the Glycerin Max is towards the pricier end And you will still need to be a big fan Of Mega stack shoes to get on with that Wedge Under Foot I don't really think That one Sho is necessarily better than The another here I think the shoe that You choose might depend on what you Really need in your rotation for me I Think the glycerin Max is one of the Best big stack shoes for the easy easy Miles and longer haul kind of Road Ultras it would be definitely something I'd consider or something like the Comrade that's a place I struggle to Find shoes I really like whereas I think There's lots of good options that cover The kinds of runs that I tackle you know In the glycerin 22 I don't think it does Them necessarily better than those other Shoes and that makes me lean towards the Glycerin Max is the best shoe to add Something different into the mix but When I weigh it up I think the glycerin 22 offers enough softness to do my Longer slower runs I'm more likely to do Faster miles in it too so for me on Balance I think the glycerin 2 just About edges it that's it from us on this Versus thanks a lot for watching don't
