We got our hands on an absolute GRAIL this week as Vick Almighty is honored to work on the Nike SB Dunk Low “What The” in the latest episode.
For those unfamiliar, the Nike SB Dunk Low “What The” is a work of art in the sneaker world. It combines elements from some of the most iconic SB Dunk colorways into a single creation.
Released in 2007, the shoe features a mismatched design that pulls from legendary releases such as the “Pigeon,” “Hemp,” “Shanghai,” “Lobster,” “Raygun,” “Jedi,” “Buck,” “Cali,” “Hufquake,” and “Lucky.” Each section of the sneaker showcases unique materials and graphics, including the famed “Pigeon” logo, the bold tie-dye pattern from “Raygun,” and the metallic gold hits from “Lucky,” among others. The final result is a sneaker that’s as visually stunning as it is rich in history.
To kickstart this project, Vick must remove the sole on both sneakers. To keep the pair as OG as possible, Vick needs to be gentle with the thread, as we’ll preserve everything to keep it near factory level.
As both outsoles need cleaning, Vick uses a Stiff Bristle Brush paired with a water bowl and the Reshoevn8r solution. To work on the upper, Vick will use the Soft Bristle Brush to dry brush the pair and the Dry Suede Kit to clean up the suede. The cleanings must be done with extreme care with so many different materials.
After applying a layer of glue to the bottom of the uppers and midsoles and letting them dry, Vick returns to reconstructing the pair. Then, it’s time to glue down the lasting boards before re-threading the shoe.
For the second cleaning on the upper, Vick uses the all-new OxiClean x Reshoevn8r Sneaker + Hat Cleaning solution to bring the pair back to life. Now, all that’s left is to lace the pair up and then preserve them using the CapSoles signature preservation kit to double the life span of the shoe and prevent crumbling, yellowing, and aging.

Each section of the sneaker showcases Unique materials and Graphics including The fame pigeon logo the Bold tie D Pattern from huff and the metallic gold S from the Tashi among others the final Result is a sneaker that's as visually Stunning as it is rich in history since Then the what the concept has been Adopted across other lines including the What the Kobes what the KD what the pr Rods and the most recent what the Ducks Dunks but it's the original what the Dunk that remains a gril among Sinker Collectors and the first thing I want to Do is remove the souls on both sneakers So I can focus on the uppers and so Separately to do so I got to take out The laces and insole then carefully Remove the stitching from the midsoles Typically I always cut this part off but In this case I got to save it because The green thread matches the green mle Perfectly same thing with the brown Thread and the brown mle it's not easily Replaceable plus I want to keep these Shoes as original as possible to do this I'm going to use a pick to get it Started then carefully I'm going to Remove the rest of the thread by Hand one thing to watch out for is to Not Yank on the thread too hard in the Past specifically on these older pairs I've had the threat Snap On Me from Yanking too hard and that's something I
Definitely don't want happening on this Expensive Pair as I was taking off the thread I Noticed something funky they skipped About two or three holes that's weird Now the question is do I leave a factory Or do I put the two holes back in we'll Find out All right the stitching is off now for My favorite part when it comes to a Restoration the peel Tell me that wasn't satisfying now those Still need work but we'll come back to Those later this next step I'm going to Get it out of the way just cuz it's the Longest step in this restoration I got To do some skying meaning I got to shave Off that thin layer of glue where the Midso sat in order to get it ready for The new glue for this step I'll be using A sharp blade as always the key to this Process is two different things the First one being keeping the blade nice And sharp as soon as I feel it dulling Out I'm going to swap it with the new One the second one is to make sure I Stay underneath that glue line now the Uppers on both of these shoes contain a Lot of different materials but for the Most part they're the same materials Leather and suede there's a couple of Panels that I will not be skying such as The stripe panel the black denim and the Tie-dye panel on those three panels I'll
Be using acetone the reason why I'm not Going to be using the blade on these Materials is cuz the material is way too Thin let's keep it moving these SS need A deep clean luckily for me they're not Heavy worn down but there's still a lot Of grime all around the red you can see It right around the edges there's a Gunk Here black all around the Stars I'm Going to get these looking as brand new As possible the green one isn't as Noticeable but they both need the same Treatment I'm going to be using a s Bristle brush a rejuvenator 4 oz bottle Solution some towels are cleaning mat to Get these fully cleaned up [Music] [Music] All right three sessions these look Great they look almost perfect I'm going To go to the sink and rinse these let Them dry so we can get back to some more Prep work [Music] The prep continues in order for the Soles to bond onto the uppers with some New glue we got to remove all the old Glue first for this I'm going to be Using some acetone cnon balls and the Heat gun I'm going to heat up little Sections at a time to get the glue a Little tacky then with the cnon balls And acetone I'm going to wipe it right Off I'm going to do that with the soles
And the foam [Music] Prep is fully done on these parts real Quick I'm going to show you a trick as You can see on the rubber on both parts There's a lot of ashiness going on this Is a common issue with older colored Rubber not sure why this happens but It's really easy to remove acetone or Cleaning it doesn't take it off the only Only way to remove it is by using the Heat gun I'm going to go over it very Slowly and you'll see it quickly Fade [Music] [Music] Away prep is fully complete On The Soles Let's move on to the uppers on the Lasting boards we got to go in with some Anone and cotton balls to do the same Thing and wipe off the glue this time I'm going to be using some Q-tips to Touch up the areas that I didn't sky Like the tie-dye the stripes and the Denim right now I'm going to clean up These sneakers these opers are going to Get two different cleaning sessions the First way is the dry clean method Meaning I'm not going to be using any Water or solution for this part I'm only Going to be focusing on these tools the Soft bristle brush to dry brush the Entire sneaker I'm also going to be Using our suede kit that comes with our Suede eraser and sede brush I'll be
Using these two tools on the ankle area Of the sneaker there is some suede with Some marks I don't is really going to Come out but it's going to break down Some of those marks the other brush I'll Be using is this brush with stiffer Bristles this brush I'm mainly going to Be using on the insoles as you can see There's a ton of lint and Gunk all of That's going to come off with this brush Throughout this entire process I'll also Be using the Compressor as I'm doing this step I'm Watching out for a couple different Materials the first material I'm staying Away from is the Red Suede there is a Good chance that it can bleed onto the Light color suede I don't want that same Thing with the Chrome swish on the Opposite side the material is very Delicate if I'm not careful I can rub The material and it'll scrape right Off million times better now I still Need to use the Lin shaver but first I'm Going to use the compressor [Music] [Music] First part of the cleaning is complete The second part will take place once the Sols are attached before I can apply new Glue I'm going to finish the prep work By using the Dremel I'm going to go over The areas that I already skyed just to Roughen out the material so it can
Adhere nicely to the sole [Music] Finally PR complete let's lay down some Glue for this I'll be using bar super Stick I'll lay down a thin coat on the Uppers the foam and the soles let it sit For a few hours then we'll Bond Everything together [Music] Glue is fully cured I let them sit Overnight I'm going to put the uppers to The side and only focus on the Soles and The foam basically what I'm going to do Is grab both pieces heat it up in Sections same thing with the sides until Everything's locked in [Music] Part one of the glue job was a success Now let's move on to the uppers this Part's tricky I added some tape to the Toe box the front of the sole and the Back to make sure everything Ls up Perfectly I'm going to heat up this area Just for a couple seconds stick it Together once that part is locked in un Drop to the back let it dry for a sec And do all the sides All right everything's in place both of These look really good last step I got To glue down the lasting boards glue's Already been applied all I got to do is Heat it up from the inside press down on It and they're good to Go glue job is complete I still got to
Go in and apply the stitching to the Mols but I'm going to let those cure for About an hour or so before I apply Pressure with the sewing G I don't want To waste any time so I'm going to get on To the cleaning on the laces and the Insoles for the insoles they overall Look great but we're still going to give Him a good scrub down using the medum Bral Brush these look great I'm going to go To the sink to rinse out all the Soap back to the shoes I got the Original thread here the green the brown And some brownie black I'm going to be Using this thread for the inside I am Replacing the old one just so I can have More to work with the outside thread is The important part to keep original now This is all I have to work with same Thing with the brown I have to make this Work no mistakes are [Music] Allowed sold are attached now this is The part where I do the second cleaning On the uppers this time I'm going to be Using our brand new renator and oxy Clean sneaker foam cleaner as you can See I'm in many RADS throughout this Cleaning I'm going to need to use the Compressor I don't want to oversaturate The sneaker in any moment overall the Sneaker is really clean the main areas I'm going to be focusing on is the head
Material there's a couple of stains here And there same thing with the elephant Print the suede on the ankle area and The Red Suede again for the most part I'm going to give it a good scrub using The soft bristle brush without Oversaturating the materials When I use the compressor I go out it as Long as possible my main goal is to blow Out as much of the water and soap that's Trapped inside the shoe most of the time I can't get it back to fully dry but it Makes the drying process a lot Faster first Sho is complete at the Moment it's drying let's move on to the Second shoe this one's going to be a lot Easier for the most part it is really Clean the only area I'm going to be Focusing on is the Red Suede once again I'm not going to oversaturate It after the second cleaning these shoes Look so much better all that STS to do Is lace them Up restoration is complete all that has To do is to preserve these sneakers Using capsule's preservation system Capsule is a reusable airtight Preservation pod that stores sneakers to Double the lifespan and keep them in Pristine condition it protects materials Such as polyurethane rubber suede Newbook leather canvas denim KN and nlon Designed to double your shoes Lipan and Prevent yellowing aging and crumbling by
