The third version of one of the Alphafly sees a number of updates. Those include a wider carbon plate to increase stability, a new midsole design that features fully connected ZoomX foam for a smoother ride, and a revamped AtomKnit upper for better lockdown and breathability.

The Puma Deviate Nitro Elite 3 sees some developments over the earlier versions of the shoe. The most important is a 4mm increase in stack height, alongside some tweaking of the Nitrofoam Elite Aliphatic TPU midsole. The aim here is more energy return and a lighter design.

There’s also a slightly stiffer carbon PWRPLATE to improve running efficiency and provide stability across the length of the shoe.

Tom hand Nick compare the shoes to see which is worth spending your money on.

Best Carbon Plate Running Shoes 2023:

Hey Tommy from the Run testers in this Video we are going to be doing a versus Of the pummer DV8 Nitro Elite 3 and the Nike Alpha 5 3 let's have a [Music] Look the Nike alphafly 3 costs £ 28499 or $285 it weighs 202 G or 7.1 o for men in A size 8 and the drop is 8 mm the pummer DV8 Elite 3 cost £95 or $230 it weighs 1887 G or 6.6 o for men In a size 8 and the drop is 8 Mm the third version of one of the World's most popular rati Sho sees a Number of updates that includes a wider Carbon plate to increase stability a new Midsole design that features fully Connected zoomx foam for a smoother ride And a revamped atom net upper for better Lock down as well as breathability The alpha 53 still has all the elements Runners have come to expr from the shoe Including its Hallmark dual Air Zoom Units in the forefoot and its impressive Notch laces however this time it's Lighter than the previous version aiming To provide an even faster ride the Pummer DV8 Nitro Elite 3 sees some Developments over the earlier versions Of the shoe the most important of those Is a 4 mm increase in stack height Alongside some tweaking of the Nitro Foam Elite aliphatic TPU midsole the aim Here is for more energy return and

Lighter design there's also a slightly Stiffer carbon power plate to improve Running efficiency as well as provide Stability across the length of the shoe The ultra weave monom mesh upper uses a Four-way stretch construction to Minimize weight and friction whil it's Also providing a surprising level of Structure and cushioning for such a Light shoe the shoe also features a Modest level of the Brand's excellent Pumer grip outsole to provide a high Level of traction and some protection For the midell [Music] Foam so it comes to fit of the two shoes I've got the same size in both which is A uk9 us10 for both of these Brands uh The Nike alphafly 3 fits me really well In that size I've got the right amount Of room in the toe box good hold around The heal and midfoot it's got this booty Style upper which I've got on with very Well have had no concerns of robbing or Anything like that so yeah I'd stick With your normal size in the alpha fly The Puma for me runs a little bit longer Than the Nike in the same size so I have Got a bit too much room around the toe Box and that's probably because I'm Generally in between sizes I'm a UK 8.5 Or a uk9 it kind of differs uh from time To time with Brands and I think the Pumer it's one of the shoes that I

Probably benefited from going a half Size down so if you sometimes find that You are on the fence between sizes maybe Go for the smaller one with the pumer But I would stick to your normal size And the Nike and if you have a pretty Regular fit for your size then I think The pum will be okay in your normal size As well but I do think it's a little bit Longer than the Nike so the fit for me In these two shoes the Nike Alpha 3 it's Pretty much what you'd expect from a Race shoe there isn't loads of space in It but there is a nice bit of padding Around the heel uh and the ankle um but If you want loads of extra space in your Shoes you're not going to get it with The alphafly 3 it's a pretty much a lock Down race shoe so I'm a size eight in The UK and this fits absolutely Perfectly for me I would stay to my size I wouldn't want any extra room in a race Shoe the uh Puma DV Nitro 83 This is a Bit roomier than what I've come to Expect from the um the range uh it has a Bit more space in the forefoot uh around The side of the shoe and in front of the Big toe so I would probably stay to my Sizing the shoe cuz I haven't had any Issues with it in the runs and the races That I've done in it but you might want To size down half a size uh if you're on Fence the Nike Al 3 and the DV8 Nitro Elite 3 are among my favorite new shoes

Of this year I think they are the best Versions of both of their respective Lines there will be debate with the Alphafly with the Ally 1 versus 3 a lot Of people still love the alply 1 but I Find the Ally 3 my the best version of The shoe yet and with pummer I think It's pretty clearly the best carbon shoe They've done in the DV8 Nitro Elite line It's got a higher stack it's more Comfortable more propulsive than the Previous versions and you've got this New aliphatic TPU foam in the midell Which has been really good the Alp life Longer I racked a lot of miles in the Shoe early on in the year when marathon Training I have raised 10K and 5K in it I've done 20 MERS in it and you know When it came out I thought it was going To be my favorite carbon shoe the shoe I'd use all year eventually the ASX met Speed Sky Paris came in and replaced it But this is still an absolutely fabulous Shoe you've got that big squishy bouncy Feeling under foot from all that zoomx Phone that you have with the alphafly You get a nice I think fast turnover With the shoe faster than the previous Models going from Heel To Toe being Pushed onto those airom pods and then a Really nice responsive feel from them For fast running I think it's got an Extra comfortable feel compared to the Pummer and it feels a lot more bouncy

And very fast all round feels like a Shoe I think out of these two I'd Probably prefer for longer distance Fence in particular but that's not to Say the Puma can't do them it is a very Comfortable shoe compared to previous Models I've gone over 22k with a hard Session in the shoe and yeah no concern Comfor concerns at all in terms of Racing long distances this new foam is a Little bit firmer than the foam on the Alphafly but very energetic it feels Like it's giving you a lot of back it Does remind me a bit of the Pham using Asx's new shoes maybe not quite as good Or the setup isn't quite good but you Are getting loads of Bounce from this Foam I think it's a really impressive Material it's a little bit firmer like I Say but not at all harsh you still got a Little bit of give and like I say yeah Loads of push back to give you that fast Feeling under f it doesn't have that Sinking squish you get from the Nike but Same time I don't think it really lacks Anything because of that like some People really like that feeling Nike it Gives it a really bouncy feeling around And you get that with the sux phone Which you don't get so much of the pumer But you do get a very fast transition And a really fast feel and I think it's Going to be a great race of FR any Distance about these two shoes I think

Where it competes best with the over Shorter distances where you've got that Fir and more nimbler feeling and the Kind of grip from the pummer grip Outside which certainly helps if you can Do races of lots of twists and turns I Did do a mixed terrain 10K in this shoe And that certainly was one area it Shines because this is such good grip on The pummer that really helps out if you Are going to be running over kind of Light trails and trying to run fast but Whereas with past Puma deviate Nitro Le I think that's almost a niche that's the Only place you they'd really occupy they You know were lightweight Nimble shoes With good grip but I think the Puma D Nital 3 is just straight up a very good Road racing shoe and has a really good Mids cell a really design it's lighter Than previous versions a little bit Lighter than the alply as well and you Are getting loads of energy return from This new MID cell phone which I think is Really good but running in both shoes at The same time you can notice the extra Bounce you get from the zoom X foam here And the way it directs you onto the Air Zoom posi of the outly just gives it a Really explosive feeling when you kind Of bounce back so if I was going to do a Versus of the alphafly 3 uh versus the Previous versions of the Puma d8 Nitro Elite I would it would be a very

Different video because those shoes were Quite um a different than what you get From the Nike Alpha 3 the early versions Of the pummer DV Nitro elite were a bit Firmer they didn't have a a lot of Bounce in them they were fast they were Good for me for shorter distances I used Them from 5 to 10K but I didn't really See them as a competitor for my shoes Like The Vapor Flies the alpha flies the A6 met speed Sky Plus those sorts of Things uh it wasn't really competitive For me uh when it came to running longer Distances than 10K the new uh three Version has is a big upgrade on the Earlier um versions of the shoe it's There it's a bit softer there definitely There's more foam in it but you can feel That there's more foam in it uh it Definitely feels like a shoe that's Better suited for longer distance runs Um and it's definitely got a bit more um Bit more pop in it for me um and a bit More Comfort overall so it really is a Big uh difference from the earlier Versions of the shoe I've raced in it a Couple of times now uh and I was really Surprised because as previous versions Of the shoe I I very rarely picked them Up for if I was going out to do a race That I really wanted to get a PB in uh Just because I want more cushioning and More energy retur in my my race shoes so I didn't really pick up the early

Versions of the shoe this shoe has now Become a shoe which I want to pick up When I go to racing it I've done uh a Couple of 10ks in this now um I'm not That fit at the moment in comparison to When I was getting my PBS last year but The ride of the shoe is definitely what I'd expect from a top tier super shoe Now and it is very very much up there With some of the best out there at the Moment previously I wouldn't have put The pum dev8 Nitro Elite one2 into my Top tier of Super Shoes now I think it Is it's definitely a shoe that I would Pick possibly even for Marathon distance And I might use this for Valencia in December when I do that so very Different shoe than the previous Versions the Nike alphafly 3 I've done a Few videos on this now and and I used it To uh race um Boston Marathon earlier in The year yeah now the Nike Ally 1 is Probably my favorite or one of my top Three favorite race shoes of all time I've uh used it for a lot of my PBS Really really like that shoe it just Works perfectly for me I like the level Of cushioning I like the level of Bounce And energy return it just works really Really well for my style of running and I can use it for any distance 5K all the Way up to the marathon and it's it just Does the job it's still better than a Lot of the other shoes that I've got I

Used to like using the vaporfly but I Use the Ally now for the majority of my Races um the Ally 3 uh I was really Excited to try because uh there were a Lot of modifications in this shoe um but Since I've been testing it and using it For races it doesn't really have the Same level of um bounce and proportion That I like uh from the Nike Ally 1 it Feels a lot more like the VAP for me it Feels a little bit leaner um it doesn't Feel as bouncy to me uh it feels a Little bit more light weight and as a Result uh when I've used it for races Especially when I used it for Boston Marathon I just didn't feel like I was Getting as much out of this shoe as uh I Was getting from the alphafly 1 so I Still think it's a great shoe I still Think uh it's one of the best options Out there but for me that leaner design To it just it just doesn't really have What I want from a Rao when you consider The price of this shoe um it's a it's a Bit of a steep cost when uh I prefer the Much earlier version of the shoe um I Still think it's one of the best ones Out there I think it's a great shoe for Anything from 5K up to Marathon distance Um but I just think it lost a little bit From um the magic that I got from the Nike Ally 1 I've never tried the two I'd Really like to try the two um but yeah It's a little bit of a disappointment

For me the alpha fly 3 uh especially Considering the cost of the shoe so Comparing these shoes is actually quite Difficult for me now because they're Actually quite similar in in how they Ride and that wouldn't have been the Case if you looked at the earlier Version of both of these shoes um the Actual eny CH from them is quite similar I would say that the alphafly 3 is a Little bit softer than the pumer um not A lot and not to the sort of softness That gives you loads of energy return I Think the energy return in both of these Shoes is pretty much um on the same Level really um and the ride is pretty Much on a par as well so really I think The main difference comes with a slight Bit more firmness in that midsole in the Puma DV8 nro Elite 3 but overall the Ride is very very similar for me and I'm Getting a um a very comparable uh ride From both of these shoes the other thing I had to say about these shoes and this Is probably specific to me uh I tend to Rip off the out soole the back of the Out soole on a lot of my Super Shoes Especially if they've got a very small Amount of rubber on the back of the Outsole uh within 20K I ripped the Rubber off the back of the pumo devi8 Nitro Elite 3 I never had any issues With the early versions of the shoe they Had a bit more rubber on them this is a

Bit lighter um and as a result they've Probably made less rubber on it to sort Of shave weight off I haven't had a Problem with the Ally 3 to be honest and That's got even less rubber on the back So um yeah if if you're the sort of Runner that does tend to um scrape their Foot on the back uh that might be an Issue for You so my Verdi it on these two shoes Really really tricky one actually as I Say if you go back to the other versions Of the shoe I would have found it very Very easy to pick between the Ally one And the pum devate Nitro Elite one um But now these shoes are very very Comparable in what they do and how you Would run in them um I never thought I Would pick the Puma deviate Nitro over The alphafly but I am going to do that This time um I think there's a couple of Reasons for that one I just like the m Midso a bit better in the in the pummer I just think it's got a little bit more To it I just thinks are getting a little Bit more energy return from it and I Like the fact that it's very very Slightly firmer just feels a little bit Denser to me than what you get in the Alphafly 3 um the other thing I find About the alphafly 3 is that um it I do Feel like it doesn't really help me very Much in the latter stages of a race it Doesn't with the ALF one I felt like it

Was giving me a little bit of a bump um To when I got I was on tired legs I Didn't feel this any time that I raced In airfly 3 still think it's a very fast Shoe I just think it's lacking something That um the outfly one had so really the Comparison down to me mainly for the Price the price of the AL 3 is Ridiculous it's a really really Expensive shoe so um just based on that I would go for the pummer all the way Because I think the differences are very Very minimal in terms of what you're Getting um so yeah I'd go for the pum Nite 3 over the Ali 3 if it came down to The price but if they were exactly the Same price I'd probably still go for the Puma dev8 nitro3 just cuz I think that They're pretty much the same shoe but I Just like the midso a little bit more in The pummer um if it was the AL one and The Puma I'd probably go for the Ally One but I just think there's something Lacking in the Ally 3 that doesn't quite Work for me so yeah I'm going for the Puma all the way comes the verdict I Think on Pure Performance I probably Pick up the alpha fly myself I think it Is the fastest shoe especially if you're Looking at marathons you've got a really Comfortable design here that's still Very fast a nice fast transition onto Those Air Zoom pods loads of bounce back And everything like that I think the DV8

Nitro Elite 3 though is a very Impressive carbon plate racing shoe and One I'd be happy to race any distance in And it is considerably cheaper than the Outfly especially in the UK you're Looking at that 90 price difference I'd Be pretty temped to pick up the pummer I Think you're going to run very well in This over any distance and I wouldn't Really feel like you're missing out that Much by not going for the Ally for such A big amount more and then even in the US the price difference is a little bit Smaller it's a big saving pum shoes do Tend to crop up in sales as well quite Quickly uh compared to other brand shoes So could end up with a real bargain here And you're not just getting a cheap shoe You're getting a very very good shoe as Well that's really not far behind I Think the alpha fly I think the pum is Right up there in general with carbon Shoes on the market right now the ALF is Just one of probably only a handful of Shoes I think I still have ahead of it Including the metas speed Sky Paris and The vapor fly but it is a very good shoe It's got a nice natural ride I think it Will work for runners with you know a Wide range of running Styles different Gates and all that it's good value it's Fairly stable for a carbon shoe got Great outsold there really Lots going For it and I do think it's an amazing

Racing shoe but it comes to it just on Pure Performance especially for a Marathon I'd pick out the alpha fly Myself but that's not to say there's not A lot of good reasons to look at the Pumer instead potentially that's it from Us on this versus thanks a lot for Watching don't forget to like subscribe Click that little bell check this out For all the other videos we've got Coming up also if you go to cat BL you Find link to the podcast which comes out A couple of times each month thanks lot For watching catch [Music]
