Hey this is Mike from The run testers and in
this video we going to be talking about this   The Puma magmax Nitro. this is Puma's latest
Max cushioned daily trainer shoe that it says   It's pretty much designed for your easy
days and Recovery runs but does it have a   Little bit more in its Locker beyond that?
Well, we're going to get into that in this   Video first we'll take you through the key
stats of the Magmax Nitro and then myself   And Nick will give you some early thoughts
on the Magmax Nitro and whether this is a Max   Cushion daily Trainer shoe that we actually
quite like and actually makes a good first Impression so here's what you need to know about
the Puma magmax Nitro the magmax Nitro is a Max   Cushioned daily trainer priced at £170 in the
UK or $180 in the US so that's putting it in   And around other Max cushion shoes like the asex
ja numers 26 Brooks giten 21 socony Triumph and   The new boun fres F more V4 and V5 it's got an
8 mm drop with stack Heights measuring in at 46   Mm at the heel and 38 mm at the 4ot Weight Wise
our men's UK size 8 weighed in at 291 g at the   Upper there's engineered mesh with pummer power
tape to offer some targeted support further back   Is a knitted tongue and a rolled collar that's
been packed with foam fide comfort and improve   Fit in and around the ankle and heel below
that lies a big stack of Puma's Nitro foam   Which also features imp pummer shoes like the
DV8 Nitro 3 and the velocity Nitro 3 that's   Completed by a puma grip rubber outsole that's
built to handle running on a mixture of running Terrain so in terms of fit I got my P magmax
Nitro in a UK size eight and that's my typical   Running shoe size and that's typically the shoe
size that does work best for me in most of peum   Shoes I think particularly in it's kind of more
cushion daily trainer Style shoes I think had   Some few indifferences with the DV8 Nitro uh shoes
the most recent ones but I think ultimately that   Going through size in general has worked well
for me and I would say that has been the case   Or it feels like the case on the mag Max Nitro I
think what I would say is is that the fits maybe   General is a little bit broader than something
like the velocity Nitro 3 which it does feel   A little bit narrow but generally does work
well for me in my narrow feet but I do think   Particularly in the toes and the midfoot you're
getting maybe just a touch more kind of Rin uh   There in comparison to something like that I was
very happy with the space up front of the toes I   Think ample amount there not overly generous the
kind of space you want to see for something that   You may be going to run a little bit longer in as
well um when you get to the midfoot good midfoot   Hold and lock there um the lacing and the tongue
combination is very good as well nothing too fussy   I quite like how this tongue kind of stretches up
a little bit and does kind of wrap on the top kind   Of nicely and securely on the top of my foot and
you get into the hill collar it's quite a generous   Amount of padding here all around the hill collar
I've had no issues in ter terms of heel rub any   Kind of heel lock down issues for me personally
so yeah for me based on my testing it feels like

Going true to size is going to work best for most
people I would say that it is a touch broader than   Something like the velocity Nitro 3 but I think
generally it's quite snug good kind of true to   Sizee fit based on my initial runs when it comes
to the fit of the magmax Nitro I've got my normal   Running shoe size here which is a uk9 that's a
us10 for Puma it's the size I have across their   Range and the shoe does fit me very well in terms
of length I've got the right amount of room in the   Toe box bit of space there no a cramped feel at
all but not too much room good hold around the   Midfoot heel has been a problem for me again now I
had this with the Puma devi8 Nitro 3 I think it's   Quite a personal thing I'm not sure it's going to
be a really big widespread problem but I've got   Quite a sensitive Achilles I find that this heel
counter for some reason irritates that Achilles   I find it very noticeable on the run and I just
feel like I end up at the end of my run like an   Inflamed Achilles I got an ice it and stuff like
that it doesn't happen with other shoes actually   Even swapped from the magmax to another shoe midr
run yesterday and this was irritating my kill   Moved over a different shoe and it didn't
happen anymore so hopefully that's not a   Widespread problem but it's something that
affected me with the DV Nitro 3 and it's   Happened again with the magmax Nitro have it
not really happened at all with other pummer   Shoes so something to look out for maybe if you
have a sensitive Achilles but it might just be me   But overall the fit is good I think in terms of
length I would stick to your normal running shoe Size I've done three runs in the Puma magmax Nitro
so far and this year I seem to have a bit of a hit   Or miss thing going on with Puma like I really
like the velocity Nitro 3 loved the Puma deviate   Nitro Elite 3 did not get on with the DV8 Nitro
3 and then the magmax Nitro is another one that   I just haven't really clicked with I've just not
been able to get into any kind of Rhythm with it   On my runs I've just been going out fairly easy
runs trying get a range of Paces within them but   Mostly just running nice and easy and I just seem
to can't really get moving in the shoe it doesn't   Seem to fit with my running style or what I like
my shoes to be obviously it is a really big shoe   But you know that doesn't tend to matter so much
if you got really good foam in there or really   Good geometry and I think the foam in the shoe is
good like you can feel the softness and the Bounce   From the Nitro in a way that I've not really
experienced before with this Nitro foam obviously   We've used it in quite High stacks on shoes like
the magnify Nitro but got a much bouncier setup   And feeli with the magmax Nitro and you know
that's really present you do feel that bounce I   Think it comes back to you quite well but I can't
really get the transition going for me like I am   A quite High Cadence Shuffle Runner and I just
can't seem to move through my foot strike very   Naturally or well in this shoe I find it a bit
heavy and I haven't really felt much of a rocker   From it and I don't think the Bounce from the foam
really is enough to compensate for all that like   It is a heavy shoe but often these shoes run a
lot lighter than they actually are on the scales

Of late I found things like the hoker Skyward
X I felt quite lightweight same with the Brooks   Ghost Max 2 but this shoe I do feel the weight
and it feels quite bottom heavy because there's   So much foam on the bottom the upper is fairly
lightweight and yeah I just struggling to pick   My feet up in it so far I did wonder if one of the
reasons for that was I was just on tired legs I've   Been on holiday I've been doing a lot more kind
of elevation while I was on the holiday running   Up and down so I've had some aching muscles so I
did wonder if that was the problem and actually   It's just my legs but yesterday I was going out
for 50 miles 24K in total and after the first 7   Or 8K in the magmax I really wasn't enjoying it
I came back I could feel my kiles you know know   Being irritated but in general the ride of the
shoe just wasn't really feeling great I swapped   To the Brooks ghost Max 2 Thinking well this will
be a test if I still feel rubbish then I know I   Just feel rubbish because I'm you know tired but
immediately felt so much better running in the   Ghost Max too like it felt like 50 grams lighter
even though the ghost Max is heavier than this   Shoe and I think I could just tick over much more
naturally in that shoe it's got more of a rocker   It's got a pretty standard nitrogen infused foam
as well it's not like it's the most Lively shoe   On the foot in comparison to the pummer but that
foam just seems to work a bit better for me or   The geometry I think is what really what worked
better me with the ghost Max 2 compared to this   Shoe so it's just a shoe I haven't been able to
tick over in I really like that feeling of be able   To tick over and just move through my stride
nicely as a high Cadence Runner and I haven't   Really had that feeling with this I think it's a
shoe that probably work very well for other people   But yeah so far hasn't really hit the spot for me
more testing to come obviously so in terms of my   Running time with the Puma magmax Nitro I've done
40K in this shoe so far and I've really tried to   Focus on the types of runs that pummer ultimately
says that this is going to be best designed for so   A you know those recovery days those easy run days
you know those days where you've gone and done a   Harder on a longer session and you just need to
be back out but you your legs are beaten up and   This is going to be a shoe that's going to give
you that kind of nice comfortable protective kind   Of feeling now with that in mind I had a kind of
Sunday run it was 9 miles very much planed to go   Out at my easy pace and it didn't quite transpire
or it didn't kind of work out that way ultimately   In terms of my experience I ended up actually
running a little bit quicker than planned in this   Shoe and I do level that a little bit at the shoe
because ultimately there's a lot of things going   On here that I think creates quite a lively wild
ride in the magmax Nitro I think the first thing   For me is that obviously you're getting that big
stack of nitro foam and you notice that bounce and   It's Lively it's a little bit on the eratic side
I would say which I think some people are going   To like but I think ultimately there's nothing
really for me raining it in you know that out   Soole the the slightly broader kind of you know
design of the shoe doesn't really re in the kind

Of bouncy Lively feel that you're getting here
in this shoe but I think also adding to that is   There's a rocker in there that I think was more
prominent than I expected it to be and I felt   Like it was pushing me onto my toes very quick and
then actually I was running below kind of 8 Minute   Miles at times in that easy run for me and that
was not the intention I think a lot of that goes   Down to the shoe wanting you or promoting you
to run a little bit quicker now it is a heavy   Shoe but I do you know I found that it hasn't
been a bulky shoe for me to wear it definitely   Is you know in those kind of Max cushion uh shoes
or the territory Max cushion shoes that are a   Little bit on that heavy side things like the
Skyward X I would say not as light as something   Like the super Blast 2 but I haven't found that
the weight has been an issue for me and I've got   You know kind of deeper into my runs it hasn't
felt like a sure to run in this shoe and as I   Said the you know the redeeming kind of feat chill
feeling for me has been that it's a lively bouncy   You know excitable ride in the magmax Nitro and
one that wanted me to run quicker and I've done   Sessions where I've gone out playing to run easy
I did a five kind easy five mile run today in it   And at points again I was dropping down below 8
Minute miles in it again when I was planning to   Go and run below or sorry above 8 Minute miles
comfortably above that as well so I think the   Shoe has surprised me a little bit in terms
of you know what I've seen here you know all   The ingredients here are the things I would like
to see from a puma shoe really comfortable Nitro   Foam I love in the pum velocity Nitro 3 and the
other pummer shoes that I've used it in a really   Good kind of out so that's grippy is the right
side of kind of you know thickness in terms of   That rubber but also giving you something that
grips very well as well too you know I've been   In dry conditions but I've used it a little bit
off-road and it hasn't felt comfortable to do so   But yeah I think ultimate the ride for me doesn't
sit with kind of easy kind of Max cushion shoes   For me I think there's a bit more of an uptempo
edge in this shoe and I've been surprised by the   Types of Pacers I've been able to run in the shoe
and not feel like it's being uncomfortable to do   I think the main thing for me it's Lively bouncy
maybe a little on the ertic side which might not   Be everyone's cup of tea but you know so far my
experience has been a pleasantly kind of you know   Enjoyable I thing which you know particularly
the types of runs that I I've used it for and   Had planned to use it for um and I think that's a
big thing for me I think the magmax night TR it's   Maybe not necess going to appeal to people just
who want those kind of shoes for those relaxed   Easy recovery day runs I think there's a little
bit more about it based on my initial running Time so I haven't had the best experience with
the magmax Nitro so far but it does feel much   More like a shoe that's just not working for
me rather than this is a bad shoe in general   I think you've got a nice midell he of all that
foam and I think some people will really get a   Lot out of it but maybe it's just not one that's
going to work for me like I say I'm a reasonably

Lightweight Runner I have a high Cadence style
I just feel like I'm not really maximizing this   Foam and it almost is working against me a little
bit as I try and tick through easy runs or move to   Any other kind of Paces be very interested to see
what Tom thinks of the shoe when he gets hold of   It because he is more of a bounding Runner loves
a load of cushioning Under Foot loves a really   Soft shoe I think he might get a bit more out of
it than I do but at the moment yeah it's not one   That's really hitting the spot for me it just
feels a bit heavy and sluggish to me and also   I've got this heel issue with the Achilles and
obiously that doesn't help as well so yeah maybe   Just less is more for me with pummer Nitro foam
like I love the velocity really like the magnify   Going all the way up to this stack I it just
hasn't seemed to work for me and the changing   Configuration here you've got what could be a
very fun Cruiser for lots of people but so far   After three runs I much prefer the feel of things
like the Skyward X and even the succy hurricane 24   Or like the Brooks ghost Max to as a kind of
bigger shoe that I still felt I could move   Quite naturally in this feels like a monster on
the foot and not necessarily in that bouncy fun   Way I was expecting and hoping for so yeah more
runs to come but I think the magmax Nitro might   Be one that I just don't really get into syn
with unfortunately so some initial thoughts   On the Puma mag Max Nitro and I have to say
I've been a little bit surprised by my tame   In this shoe now I definitely felt like this was
going to be the kind of Max cushion shoe that was   Going to sit with things like the aex GEL Nimbus
I think the Brooks Glycerin I think things like   The Brooks ghost Max as well too it's giving you
that big stack of cushioning But ultimately to   Be you know to deliver the Comfort over those
longer runs and to just you know be best suited   For those kind of easy kind of very relaxed runs
when you're not running your quickest that's not   Quite what I've seen in the magmax Nitro so far
and I do think it's veing into that kind of Max   Cushion super trainer territory where it can
work for easy runs but I definitely do think   There's more of an Up Tempo Edge to this shoe
and I do think it can handle that and it kind   Of wants you to run a little bit quicker in the
shoe I think of things like Skyward X I think to   A degree the super Blast 2 as well but I think
ultimately that is a significantly lighter shoe   You notice that compared to the magmax Nitro
and I think for you know much faster running   The super Blast 2 can kind of handle that but I
think for kind of easy to moderate to Up Tempo   Runs I found that the magmax Nitro kind of wants
you to run a little bit like that definitely   In terms of what I'm seeing in the buildup of
this midsole and the kind of lively ride that   You get and then when you add in the fact that
you're getting this very comfortable overall   You're getting this very strong grippy pumer grip
out soole it's cheaper than things like Skyward   X and the super Blast 2 this could potentially be
for a lot of people a more affordable alternative   To those shoes and that's kind of what I'm seeing
here was actually I said I didn't think that was

Going to be the case for me when I first put
the magmax Nitro in and kind of how it was you   Know kind of sold to me or I saw it being sold by
pummer but ultimately I think there is a little   Bit more about the shoe definitely based on my
experience that I think actually this is more   Max cushion kind of super trainer for me and as
much as a Max cushion easy day shoe I think for   A lot of people it probably will be but I think
there's going to be a few few people actually   They're going to find they can run a little bit
quicker in the shoe because that's definitely   What I found and I definitely had I definitely
think it has a little bit more versatility to it   Than I you know first anticipated so actually
some kind of positive time in the Puma magmax   Night show so far and I've had a pretty good time
running in it as well overall okay so there you   Have it some initial thoughts on the Puma mag Max
nitr fair to say bit of a mixed experience from us   So far but obviously more testing to do before
