Vick Almighty restores an absolute grail by getting his hands on an unreleased pair of the Nike SB Dunk Low “Freddy Kreuger” from 2007.
It’s rumored that only 30 pairs exist after Nike canceled the release due to copyright infringement and licensing issues. If you know, you know that the resell value on these can go anywhere from $20,000 to $250,00. However, these need some TLC before they’re anywhere close in value.
The goal for this project? 1. Bring them back to life, 2. Up the value, and 3. make them wearable again. Time to get into it.
Vick gets started with the upper by removing the laces and getting rid of the stitching to separate the shoe. Since they’re from back in the day, the glue is at a state where the upper pops right off whenever the stitching is removed.
Then, Vick works his way from the bottom by giving the outsoles a deep clean with the Stiff Bristle brush. Typically, Vick would find a donor sole to execute the restoration. But since it’s such a rare shoe, he’s going to keep it as original as possible.
After that, Vick first shaves off lint before using the Medium Bristle brush for the cleaning. As for the laces, Vick will leave them soaking overnight in a bowl of solution.
Before reapplying the midsole and upper, Vick needs to remove the old glue. While a dremel usually does the trick, Vick will use a heat gun, acetone, and cotton balls to get it off. Vick grabs a sharp blade to delicately remove the old glue on the bottom of the upper. As for the glue found on the green and red part of the shoe, Vick will use cotton boll and acetone to not risk messing up the material.
Once that’s done, Vick grabs the dremel and softly takes it to the brown suede part.
Now, it’s time to put on some new glue without getting any on the uppers. Before the application, Vick marks the center of both parts of the shoes with tape to line them up perfectly.
To ensure that this pair is wearable, we need to re-stitch them: cream thread on the outside and white thread on the inside.
It’s time to clean the uppers using the Reshoevn8r x OxiClean Sneaker + Hat Foam Cleaner, Soft Bristle brush, and shoe trees.
Once the shoes are dried, it’s time to lace them up.
