The Saucony Triumph 22 sees some major updates to the line. The biggest is a new PWRRUN PB foam midsole, a PEBA-based material replacing the PWRRUN+ found in the Triumph 21 that aims to improve cushioning, energy return and responsiveness. The same foam is used in the Saucony Endorphin Pro 4 and Speed 4.
There’s also an updated upper designed to be even plusher and more comfortable than its predecessor, and a noticeably wider base across the full length of the shoe to improve stability.
Tom and Nick have tested the shoe out to see if it’s worth buying.

Hey Tommy from the r testers in this Video we are going to be doing our full Review of the sakon Triumph 22 let's Have a Look the S Triumph 22 cost £170 or $160 It weighs 306 G or 10.8 Oz for men in a Size 8 and the drop is 10 Mm the S trium 22 you see some major Updates to the line the biggest of those Is a new power on PB foam midsole a Peber based material replacing the power On plus found in the Triumph 21 that Aims to improve cushioning energy return And responsiveness the same Pham is used In the socony Endorphin Pro 4 and speed For there's also an updated upper that's Designed to be even plusher and more Comfortable than its predecessor and a Noticeably wider base across the full Length of the shoe to improve stability On the outs soole there's a generous Layer of rubber to provide grip and Protect the Midol PH okay Nick the Triumph 22 how's the Fit for you simple one for me if it'sit Been perfectly good in my nor running Shoe size same size I have across all Socony shoes and indeed the triumph over The past few Generations it's reasonbly Roomy shoe in my size I'd say which is What you want in a cushion shoe like This so yeah very happy in my normal Running shoe size I'm the same I was Abolutely finding this I ran London
Marathon in it from Straight Out of the Box uh didn't have any issues with all There's a lot of padding in it uh There's a lot of space in the forefoot Um I did have a little bit of trouble T Getting the nice lock down fit in it uh Straight away um but I don't think That's an issue with the fit I just Think it's cuz I was ringing marathon And you know she's get uncomfortable Over 42 Km okay so how's the run test been for You in this shoe been an interesting one It wasn't really what I expected it's Fair to say like I think I've I kind of Like it I think it's quite an Interesting shoe like it's very Different to the Triumph 21 and I think You know see Power on PB you expect Something in particular you maybe expect Almost a super trainer field perhaps but That's not really what I get from this Sh I think it's almost bit more like They've gone for the Invincible if Anything and from Nike and they've got a Big all their big peer foam in there but They've made the shoe wider heavier than The previous version of the Triumph and It feels much more like a dedicated Easy Day Cruiser for me now I've done quite a Lot of runs in the Shi PR all my postm Marathon recovery runs in it one run Before the marathon and you know it's Nice it's comfortable enough it feels
Okay I think it's quite soft for me Landing at the hill I think there's a Big wedge of foam there now it's quite Wide at the hill now and it feels very Comfortable for me very nice and relaxed But it doesn't feel like necessarily What you expect a power run PB shoe to Feel like um so that was probably the Biggest it was quite yeah it took me a While to kind of almost work out the Shoe because it did feel quite different To I think what we both expected right Tom yeah it's a it's a really weird shoe For me I um obviously banged on about The the Triumph 21 the 20 loads of times Um when I picked up this shoe and heard It had a a peber um midsole in it or a Peber designed midsole um I was Expecting it to be very very different Than what I actually got from it so the First time I running this was London Marathon and I when I did a the first Run review I actually took it out again After the marathon cuz I'd ran Boston Six days before so I was worried that my Weak legs might have um very weak they Were very weak uh might have affected my View of the shoe um because what I felt In the marathon was that it just felt Very dead to me um and I didn't feel any Bounce in it it definitely didn't feel Like a the the the the missile had Improved um for the way that I run uh The second run that I took it out on was
A few days after the under Marathon I Got a very similar uh feel from it um But I think I've sort of worked out what I'm getting from this youe now cuz in The first run review you talked about The midsole being softer um I mentioned It being firmer than the uh Tri Confusing for everyone watching very Confusing but I I do think for me it Feel firmer cuz I hit it right in the Midsole and you don't really get if you Hit on the midsole it doesn't really do Anything it you don't get any of the Softness from it it always feels like a Flat shoe that sort of you just hit the Ground and there's there's nothing from It I think the people of mids is Actually quite dense um in certain Points and that's where I'm hitting it So I it felt to me like a very dull sort Of um uh there's no energy return Anything from this if I step on my heel It does feel like a very soft shoe I can See where you're coming from with the Invincible feel of the shoe yeah but for Me it just doesn't I think I've hitting It in the worst possible place on the Shoe because it's just like hitting the Ground and that's it it's not really Getting anything back um I don't think It's the most bouncy I will say that Like even though I do think it's soft But I yeah I I was running it again I Was run it several times I've enjoyed it
Fine um but today I was running it again Comparing it to Triumph and the ride and Shoes like that and it yeah it doesn't Feel like it's really coming back to you After you Landing it which is surprising For power run PB which we do we do think Is a good phone we've used it a lot supp We've always used it shoes with plates And much more exaggerated rockers you Haven't got so much of that here it does Feel yeah probably feels Clos to Something like the 1080 v13 or me I Think you a bit of a sink in at the heel But then it it doesn't really spring Back in the way you necessarily expect Yeah I agree and I also think there's a There's a less of a rock emotion in this It doesn't feel like uh I think with the Triumph the previous two triumphs I Think I felt when I ran in it I it felt Like it was moving me forward and There's a nice fluid emotion which is Why I really like those shoes this I Just hit the ground and it's like okay That's it back off again um and it's not It's not an unpleasant shoe it's just Doesn't do anything for me and when You're changing the phone to um Power on PB you sort of expect it to do a bit More cuz all the other shoes do loads um That the you know the the Pro 3 and Everything Pro four uh it just doesn't Seem to be the same phone to me in this And um as a result I don't really
There's not really a place in my Rotation for the shoe at the moment well Quite yeah it's a lot wider than the Triumph 21 I think that's and that's why It gained weight despite using in theory A light of foam but that width is really Noticeable when you land in it and it Makes it like I say feel very cruisy Very tank so like I would always have Used the Triumph 21 and you know Previous models myself as an easy day Shoe anyway but it was a pretty Versatile shoe I think for a cushion Shoe it definitely had a faster Transition than this I think the Firmness I felt from that compared to This was not an unpleasant firmness it Was just a bit more resiliency you got Onto the toes and it gave you a little Bit of punch back and you could run Reasonably quick in the tri for a Cushion shoe I'd say and this feels it's Gone from that cushion daily trainer Category that things like the glycerin Are in that you can use for kind of a Bit of everything into this Max stack Super cushioned category which is not Designed to be really versatile it's it Is much more these big protective shoes I think this is a really protective shoe Like I really enjoyed it on tied legs Cuz I didn't run a marathon it straight After my Marathon but I I enjoyed it you Know the kind of I've been doing quite
Short 5 Mile runs 10K runs nothing too Long and it just feels like you can you Know mooch about and it protect legs Quite nicely and that probably will have Quite a lot of appeel I think maybe the Triumph wasn't getting those people but I think it probably was because it was It did have a bit of that cushioning Whil it's also still being pretty verse St so I think it is quite we knew when The ride 17 came out and it was so close To the Triumph 21 that the tri 22 was Going to be something quite different But it's surprising the way they've made It different but it'll be interesting to See how it works out like people do love These big you know soft shoes I think These days and it like I said is good I'm a heel Striker I think it definitely Works better for heel Strikers which is The majority of Runners and I think that Will be something that they benefit from And appreciate but I don't think it's Going to be that popular with Necessarily with fans of the Triumph Line no no I agree and I think there's I Think it's going up against shoes like The uh like the New Balance more V4 now Which I don't think the suy Triumph uh 20 and 21 really were doing there Because there were there we talked about This many in a lot of videos where we Talk we said those shoes were sort of Developing into more daily shoes more
And more uh being becoming more Versatile they've gone the other way With it and it's sort of um going back Towards those Max stack sort of heavily Cushion shoes that are quite stable um But as a result it's become a less and Less likely I'll use a shoe because of That yeah it feel like shoe you need to Have a rotation with probably and I Guess now I think they got rid of the Endorphin shift the Triumph 22 got the Power on PB foam in it maybe you but you Know you have the speed in the Pro and They you do loads of runs in those and This is a pure recovery day shoe now but I think the Triumph had a lot of appeal As a shoe that people would buy and it Would be their only shoe I don't think You maybe get so much from that with This shoe now but maybe it'll be proved Wrong but yeah I didn't mind running in It you know it was fine but I don't tend To love just all out cush shoes like This myself anyway even for my easy runs But didn't dislike running in it and I Think it Felts better for me than it Feels for you but it's a it's a risky Update okay so the verdict on the trium 22 Nick give give us what you uh what Are you thinking about this shoe I think We've quite we expressed our confusion I Think we are quite confused about this I I think if sakir going for a big allout Cruiser soft shoe comfortable shoe great
Field Striker just going to roll through Runs protect the body they've achieved It here I think that is not what Necessarily we thought the Triumph was In the past so that is going to make People I think a bit confused but if You're coming fresh to the line I think It is quite similar to shoes like the Invincible the ax Jael Nimbus 26 that Kind of thing and I like it you know as Much as those shoes it's not really my Kind of shoe so I wouldn't necessarily Go and rush out a bite myself but if You're looking for an easy day Cruiser To add into a rotation it will do the Job but I think if you were coming to it As of found in the Triumph 21 which is Like a cushion daily trainer that has a Bit more I'd say like versatility I Don't think you're really getting that So much the shoe but then s has given You the ride 17 which is very similar I Think to the Triumph 21 so you still Have that option within the range and Also Triumph 21 now is reduced I just Saw it today reduced everywhere anyway How about you Tom what's your verdict on The 22 yeah I think I think for me it Really comes down to the price of the Shoe uh I think I think the the the Previous two triumphs there were the Sort of shoe that anybody could buy Whether you're a big beginner whether You're you know you're seasoned Runner
And you find a place for it in your Collection and it became good value for Money because you can use it for lots of Things I think this shoe if it's if it's Punching in that world of uh recovery Day shoes comfortable shoes those sorts Of things it I don't think it's going to Benefit from doing that because I think There's lots of other shoes in them in That category that are really really Good and offer things that this shoe Doesn't offer um I think it was a Strange move to put the new midsole in It when everyone really like that of the Midsole um I can see on paper why they Did it but in reality I don't think it Really has any benefits especially um For somebody like me I think the gometer Of the shoe really doesn't work for me Um which is upsetting because I really Wanted to like this shoe and I was very Excited about getting it um but yeah I I Just I just feel like um the Triumph 21 the high was a relatively expensive Shoe in comparison to some of the other Ones like the the previous ride um was Still good value for money because you Could use it for loads I used to use it For loads and loads of different runs Whereas this for the price tag it's like Well it doesn't even do as many things As the the previous one did so I don't See why i' why I'd get this one over Over the trium
21 yeah I mean I don't think I'm I'm not As harsh on it as you still not a shoe That i' pick up myself I think it will Do its job if you are looking for a Cushion shoe it's really expensive a lot Of the shoes in these categories are and I still don't really think you need to Spend that much money to get a big cush Shoe like this the magnifying Nitro is a Really nice cushion shoe that's a lot Cheaper um I think if you are looking For that all out softness you balance 1080 v13 does it quite well as well it's A lot lighter so that I think maybe Gives it a bit more of an edge I mean I'm not a huge fan of that shoe either But if you look normally I I can defer To Tom he's the one who likes all the Cushion shoes he can tell you which one To buy but he doesn't really like the Shoe at all so I'm trying to scramble up Cuz I don't use many of these shoes that Much but I do think this is a reasonbly I think this is a successful very Cushion shoe I just don't think it's a Triumph it feels like a different shoe Entirely really to me well I I'll I'll just say that um I think that It's it's a little bit like having your Cake and eat it I think with a shoe Where you've got a Midol foone in here That you want to be soft you want to be Used for cushion runs you want to be Used for long runs but you're also
Trying to make it responsive as well and It doesn't do either of those very well Whereas the Triumph 21 did those pretty Both of those things relatively well um And as a result you've got sort of a Shoe that doesn't really tick either of Those boxes um and I do think the midell Has become quite um obviously if you hit It in the right spot it's you can sort Of feel the fact that the foam is Designed to be a little bit more you Know propulsive bit bouncier but not Over the most as a shoe so uh for me I Still think if you're going for an easy Day shoe or something like that there Are better options that are a lot Cheaper if you're going for a verstile Shoot there are options that are a lot Cheaper so it's sort of H it's h that's That's where I'm sitting with it Surprising yeah it's rare situation I Mean this is a change that everyone was Excited about if you'd asked a million People who like the trium what would you Like I'd love to put the power on PB FKS In it and then they've done it and it Just hasn't worked it just shows a lot Of things go into Sho making I think it Is because they made it so much wider And it ends up being heavier result I Think that hasn't helped yeah but I Think they did that because they guessed They thought power on PB is a soft phone We need to have stability make it wider
