Welcome to another episode of Shoe Care Academy with a familiar face from back in the day.
Quinn is going to clean his Aime Leon Dore x New Balance 990v4 in this SCA episode. The shoes are pretty beat up, so he’s dedicated to bringing them back to life.
To start, it’s important to do a proper inspection to determine which areas need cleaning. The crease in the toe box, the suede, and the mesh are noticeable, so that’s where the emphasis will be. Before that, Quinn starts by unlacing the shoe.
The Soft Bristle brush will be the first choice for dry brushing the sneaker of the first layer of dirt and grime. It’s time to grab the adjustable shoe tree and snap it in. Before the cleaning, Quinn uses our signature Sneaker Wipeds to work the midsole. Then, Quinn grabs the dry rack and bowl combo.
Using the Reshoevn8r x OXiClean foam, Quinn starts cleaning the tongue and drying it off with the microfiber towel. Quinn starts working on the sock liners.
With the Soft Bristle brush, Quinn foams up the brush and dips it in water before working on the upper.
Then, Quinn uses the Stiff Brush to clean the midsole without touching any of the suede on the upper. The outsole gets a well-deserved clean with the same brush.
Quinn returns to the laces, dunking them in the solution and then cleaning them with the Soft Bristle brush.
After air drying, the shoe looks great, but the suede is still a little crunchy. To fix that, Quinn grabs the Medium and Brass Bristle brushes to revive the suede. Then, Quinn grabs the Mink Oil and brushes it in to bring the color back.
The cleaning is noticeable for sure. All of the products used can be found on Reshoevn8r.com. Use code “ALD20” to save 20% off site wide.

Hey everybody what is going on Quinn Almighty here back from the dead uh Don't worry the name Almighty has been Sanctioned by Vic I was on the channel a Long time ago the ogs might remember but It's been about 5 years I think since I've been on the channel bear with me Today as we uh we go through today I'm Cleaning a personal pair of New Balance 990 v4s these are the am Leon dor clay I Think is the colorway on these lots of Materials going on they are pretty dang Dirty I don't know how well you can see It here but they're covered in stuff so Let's uh see if we can bring these back To life I bought these last year I think Around August and I have worn the heck Out of these shoes they're probably Actually my favorite shoes you can see The creases and toe box and I wore these To Disneyland I think first and that got Them pretty beat up again you got to Look cool man you're going to dland you Want to you want to wear cool shoes so I Wore these and they got they got a lot Of the scuffs and some of the dirt but Really what got them dirty is I was at a Birthday party a kids's birthday party Two weeks ago 3 weeks ago and it was Just Dusty as heck and I may or may not Have uh torched some kids in football I'm just saying you can see they're Pretty beat up and it's hard I don't Know how much it shows up in the camera
But the clay I think the clay color and The orange probably hides the dirt a Little bit better the first thing I Would do is when you clean a pair of Shoes is you really need to inspect the Shoe so I'm going to set this one aside And we're going to take a good look at Really where the hot spots are where Dirt is figure out what tools we need in Order to clean these correctly so you Can see we have a kind of a mesh Material here you have leather here Suede here here this is actually 3M Pretty cool and I think the tongue has a 3M part on it yeah that's that's pretty Sweet I personally prefer mixed material Shoes and and things that are just a Little more interesting again not Everybody's going to be rocking a pair Of orange New Balance like this but when You do that and you you are attracted to Shoes like this it makes the cleaning Process a little bit more tedious right You just got to make sure you clean it Correctly you have some options when You're cleaning suede you can wet it you Can put even put it in the washing Machine so let's get started so I have The left shoe I'm going to set here to The side for before and after purposes Take a look at how well they do after I Do clean them it's it's almost always Really noticeable when you do clean a Shoe like this so let's start with I'm
Actually going to take the laces out on This first now this is kind of optional I don't consider it optional personally When you have a pair of shoes like this You want to get them clean let's clean Them and this part of the the appeal of This shoe it has these cool kind of Off-white beige laces it shows dirt and You can see those we want to clean those Separately and because I'm not wetting Uh the outside of the shoe I want to Make sure that these get cleaned Sometimes laces make a shoe sometimes They make or break it you know I bought A pair of um what are they the varsity Red Jordan 1es and they came with the Red laces on it and they just felt too Loud for me put the black ones on Boom Totally changed the style of the shoe Kind of a lace geek I think Vic is too Doesn't always wear the stock laces on a Shoe he switches them out so so you can See and they're pretty dirty and they're Full of dirt so we'll set those aside And we'll we'll clean those later so the First thing that we almost always do Nowadays before cleaning a Sho is dry Brush it that wasn't always true but What we found over the years is when you Get a you start hitting a a shoe with a Brush it just drives the dirt into the Material it's a best practice to take Our three brush pack this is why we have Three different brushes I have them set
Aside here and really just get get the Dirt off first right it's a really Perfect brush to just take it off it's Stiff enough to get the the dirt off but It's not rigid enough to damage the shoe In any way so let's start with putting The the soft bristle brush here and just Brushing the dirt off I like to to hold The brush kind of end to end when I do This and just kind of brush Away yeah you can you can already see it So I don't know if that showed up in the Camera but like this whole area yeah you See The Buttery suede coming back we're Still going to hit it with a dry suede Um eraser and a dry suede brush but Regardless let's just get the dust off So I'm just going to brush every part of The shoe doesn't matter if it looks Dirty or not let's just get it clean Right that's what we're here to do I Want at the end of this to really take This shoe and go this looks almost dead Stock I'll even talk to you about the Creases a little Bit yeah it's already looking a lot Better which is good but you can see in Kind of the main areas where I kick Things and I hit I hit stuff you can see That the suede is matted and the suede Is dirty there and obviously the mid Sole is still a mess so we got to get That cleaned up let's look right there Got the
There we go a lot of dirt comes off when You dry brush sometimes that's the best Start we hear comments about the fake Dirt listen first of all there's no such Thing as fake dirt that's ridiculous um But second you can see how warm these Shoes are I wear these all time there's Still a lot of spots and everybody is Different with their shoes for me it's Like I see it once you you get a shoe Like this which is a lighter color you See those spots every time you put them On and I just go ah man I wish these Were cleaner so I'm excited to get these Back to Fresh so now that that's done I'm going to put in a shoe tree these Are adjustable which is really nice so I Can kind of take that I think this is Where I was before it's again it's been A few years and go ahead and put that in There snap it into Place oh that's perfect perfect size and What's nice about this first of all you Can see it kind of it lifts the crease a Little bit I don't know if we're going To get this wet yet I don't think we are But if you did get it wet it does Eliminate creases when you clean it and Have a shoe tree in there some people Like creases they like to make it look That way I like to eliminate them but It's a good thing to have in before you Start cleaning so here is a pro tip I Actually learned from cleaning Master
Vic Almighty is that you can take a Sneaker wipe and just get some of the Again The Hot Spot areas so you're not Creating as much of a mess with the Brush cool thing about our wipes is they Have a soft side and a perforated side You can see so that you can kind of Hit The tougher stains out with that we use Wipes a lot around here we use them for I don't know Backpacks shoes clothes it stops this Because I don't want to get that suede Too wet here you can kind of hit it just With the wipe here you go and spot clean It that took off a lot which is awesome Little 3M there get that cleaned up I'm Going to hit that I think with our foam So now that that's done we are going to Get our Bowl so this is actually one of My favorite things that the business has Added over the last few years is you Have a bowl literally not just to store Water put water in with solution so it's Nice that these are around so you can Store your brushes properly again when You're using premium products and you're Putting on premium shoes you take care Of it right you want your brushes the Last so this is a great tool you can Storm afterwards and and kind of dry it On there is a top and bottom the top is A little bit taller so we'll use that to Put the water in here we go people do Ask about using hot and cold water I
Don't think it matters that much I Personally like it a little warmer a Little hotter I just makes it feel like It gets it more clean I don't think it Does I think that's a that's a lie feels Like it does all right so here is the Best thing in the world check this out Oxyclean sneaker and hat foam cleaner Brand new to the brand so we teamed up With oxyclean to create this product This has become pretty much like our Most popular product and there's a Reason because it's when it comes to Stuff like this it's so handy and it's So fast that you can really kind of uh Use it anywhere and on Anything so a lot of people ask us with The foam how is the best way to use this Product do I put it directly on the shoe Do I put it in the solution do I put it On a brush the short answer is it really Kind of depends on what you're cleaning In this scenario I'm going to get the Brush a little wet I'm going to put some On on the brush and then we're just Going to spot clean it because what I'm Trying to avoid I really don't want to Get the the suede too wet it's not Really going to hurt anything to be Honest I could clean this whole shoe With water and I just don't think it's Going to I'll say affect the color of The shoe I don't think it'll bleed or Anything like that and I'm only going to
Try and get the inside sock liner the Toe and the um midsole wet to do that I'm going to start with the uppers here I'm going to take the soft brush I'm Just going to get it a little bit Wet look at that Beautiful so I'm going to be really Careful here and it's again it's okay if I get it anywhere else but I just prefer Not to and I'm just going to look at That going to clean that Up I'm not a very delicate guy So there you go that's cleaned up nicely And this was covered by the laces so it Actually didn't look too dirty doesn't Matter we're we're here to clean it I'm Going to clean it anyways do doesn't Take doesn't take too long so this is Our premium microfiber towel we do sell These separately they also come in the Essential kit um and some other things And I'm just going to kind of clean it Off and I'm going to inspect it right How's it look looks pretty good people Ask all the time too do you clean the Inside it also just depends I I Personally and dip that back in water And you can see the water is now getting Foamy again there's really no perfect Amount of solution or water it's just a Matter of really how wet you want your Shoes right and so in this case we're Going to just limit the amount And I'm just going to again spot clean
It super fast super easy that's really All you need to do it's not that dirty Don't need to go crazy again the top of The sock liners is usually what gets Dirtiest yeah it looks like it needs a Little bit of love there so cuz these Are always getting Touched just give it a scrub with our Soft bristle brush you can scrub pretty Dang hard it's not going to hurt Anything that's why we like having the The brushes we have because you get the Right tool for the right job look yeah I Then look pretty good so let's move on To the sock liner now as you can see This isn't terrible either you got some A little bit of peeling in there they do Make these lint Shavers that Vic likes To use where you can get in there and Get all the pills out they're like I Don't know 15 bucks or 20 bucks I think On Walmart or Amazon and they go in There they're electric and they go take All that out I'm not that really uh Crazy about that I don't I don't care That much pills don't bother me I just Don't want it to look dirty like this so Around here this is going to be a little Bit tricky so I'll show you what I'm Going to do to just try and keep the Sued dry again I don't think it's super Important but we're going to do it Anyways I'm just going to stick the Towel there I'm just going to kind of
Clean around It nice looks good and then the Materials again on these Sho there's Just so many materials here you got 3M It's like a neoprene or I'm not sure What it is and then you have also the The knit here and then you got suede a Little bit below that so again whenever I clean shoes it depends on what I'm Cleaning but I don't really go crazy Unless I absolutely need to again get it As soapy as you want there and that's Coming up real nice Yeah that looks Great always have a towel handy got a Little water on that part there again no Worries now that I'm deeper I've gotten A little deeper into the cleaning I Think I'm just going to clean the whole Shoe with our brushes dry suede kit is Nice but now that I look at the shoe It's really due for a cleaning so I'm Just going to take all three brushes and Start cleaning this this one I'm going To just take my time I'm going to do it Do it nice and slow but I'm going to Dunk this in the water a little bit of Water on there a little bit of foam and I'm just going to gently scrub the Shoe and you could see it soaks up Pretty fast that's okay not a big deal Um the suds you want to get a a complete Thorough clean across all the parts of The suede just so it can be even right
You don't want a spot clean suede Because it'll show spots in there so That whole side is done we're going to Take our brush or our towel excuse me We're going to just wipe that off and We're going to check it out my method of Cleaning is brush a little bit look look How it did do we see anything else we Need to hit a little bit harder actually Looks pretty good you know what's Interesting is you didn't you don't Always realize even the leather Sometimes they're dirtier than they look And once you clean it you kind of get a A better feel for how much it's getting Clean a little more foam little more Water a little more Scrub again these shoes weren't trash so We don't got to go crazy on this but we Do want them clean I will notice a Difference that's for dang sure I Already have you can see it pretty much Everywhere we'll show the before and Afterwards so you can see exactly what It looks like I don't know why you guys Can't see the 3M that really bothers me Looks so cool in here to see the Reflections maybe I'm just geeky about It so now that the uppers are pretty Much totally cleaned let take a look at That we got I'm going to hit the the Insole and the tongue just a little bit More all right this is a part that gets Dirty a lot on the top so we're going to
Do That we'll clean This look at That this is just kind of awkward trying To clean the the inside of a shoe people Always ask about it I think people Generally speaking want to be delicate When they're cleaning a shoe and the Reality is is you can pretty much clean Everything the more you clean the the The better it's going to look afterwards So my suggestion is always you're Cleaning the shoe clean the insole clean The out soole just get it clean and at The end it'll look really nice we're Going to move on the stiff brush for the Midsole here I think this is kind of an Off-white color he's using a lot of Different colors on here but this is Kind of an off-white so it it's intended To look a little yellow when I look at These outsoles and I'm trying to figure Out how to clean them I always think is This painted can I use a stiff brush on This cuz these stiff bristles they're Really stiff so if you're not careful And you Hammer something that maybe is Flaking or is has paint loose on it it's Going to come right off so I always tend To be a little bit careful when I'm Choosing the right brush in this case I Think a stiff brush will work just fine So I'm going to move our soft brush to The
Side and this doesn't need a lot of Water or a lot of soap and I just try to I try not to hammer the uh the outside Here I always try to be really careful Not to hit the the suede with the with The stiff brush it will damage it Especially with a nice premium suede Like this you want to be pretty careful With it so I I'm very careful as I go Around here and I and I clean the Different the different parts of This so the famous question around here Do you clean the out sole some people Think this is a total waste of time I am Going to clean it I'll tell you why one Look at how nice that shoe is starting To look now looking pretty good little a Few pieces here and there probably need To clean up but why would you do all That work and just leave this so we're Going to do that we're going to take That I'm to put a little more water in The bowl here we're going to take a Little bit more foam and to get the Brush a little wet going to pump it Right onto the brush there's something About just seeing it on the brush makes It feel like it's getting more clean I Don't think it makes a difference but Something something psychological There and again everything on the out Soole here is an off- white color it's Not going to come out bright white but It will get it back to color it's
Intended to be with the stiff brush These can if you go crazy it'll make a Mess I like to go up and down on this Like this that way the the suds and Water aren't flinging all over the Place let's take our towel do the reveal Here oh yeah that looks nice look at That and again the shoe's been worn Quite a bit so it's it's not going to Come back DS but it's intended to get Back pretty close I take the towel and I Get into some of those kind of alleys There try and clean them out okay after Inspecting after the clean there is a Rock kind of buried in there so we're Going to dig that out this is Vic's tool I don't know where he got it but you Could probably get these on Amazon or Anywhere just literally a little pointy Edge be careful don't stab yourself look At that that is therapy right there Digging out that Little Rock there's a Little something here too yeah look at That another Little Rock in there we can Dig out That looks pretty good I don't think I'm Going to be able to get that much Cleaner without tearing a lium in my Elbow we're going to move on from that Now and let's just take a minute and Inspect the shoe this is this is the the Most important part of cleaning you Don't want to spend all this time on it Have a big Mark and you're like oh man
Last part is laces so this is something I like to do every single time I clean a Pair of shoes you dunk the laces now if We were going to put these in the Laundry machine I would actually throw Them in the bag we're going to soak them First and then and then what I'm going To do is I'm just going to take the Laces I'm going to take our soft bristle Brush and I'm just going to scrub Them they weren't like incredibly dirty Um but let's just take a look at it There a little bit of dirt different Places just kind of spot clean it yeah These look these look pretty good here's A little trick we like to do squeeze the Water out pull it through there this Whole process is like a kind of therapy So now that we've got these cleaned we Just need to let them dry and we will Check back in tomorrow all right so the Shoe has totally air dried guys Unfortunately turned out great no Unfortunately is around here this is Awesome looks really really good um one Thing I will say and this is kind of Hit Or Miss just depending on the shoe the Suede is a little crispy it's not bad But it definitely needs to be brushed Out and basically our goal as always or At least my goal when I'm cleaning my Shoes to get them back to deadstock um And they're pretty close to be honest so I'm happy with this these brass bristle
Brushes they they actually have quite a Few purposes this is one I just like to Have in the tool bag this shoe is Exactly really what this was made for I Want to be a little bit more delicate And test it you can see I mean this this 990 here it's already kind of flaking Off just from wearing the shoes a lot um But I'm not going to just Hammer we're Not going to hammer this I'm just going To we just going to gently rub it across The shoe and see if we Can Beautiful and this is this heel cap Obviously has a nappier suede than the Rest of the shoe so it's it's not really All going to come back but I'm just Going to just Gently gently give it a little bit of a Brush I like textures on shoes that's Why I'm always wearing uh New Balance Because I like multimaterial shoes and Textures and things like that all right So at this point like I just care about Texture you can see there's a little bit Of color fade I don't think there's a Lot I don't have the the other shoe Handy but we sell a product called mink Oil this is a pretty common product but This is another one that when you have a Shoe like this we're going to hit this With mink oil and brush it in just Because even if it didn't really fade at All I want there to be the richest color
Possible this orange is stands out it's Bright it's intended to be a shoe that You know people look At and then you're just going to just Apply a few little coats there evenly Right you don't want it to be globbed on There we go and then I'll take the Medium bristle brush from before I'm Just going to gently rub it in It definitely darkened the leather just Cuz it's wet right now when it dries out It's just going to go back to its its Standard color we'll Rich up a little Bit cuz that's what mink oil does it Isn't oil but we go let's get the other Side There and again this is uh this is Therapy just get in here and bring your Shoes back to life this is about the Experience for people who really love Their sneakers want to take care of them Okay so now remember we cleaned the Laces they came out looking pretty good You always can hit them a little bit Harder every time I clean laces I always Regret a little bit that I wasn't more Aggressive with them I mean you they're Hardly noticeable again we put them on The shoe you won't you won't see any Dirt at all I really try to take my time On this and do it right I also wear my Shoes a little bit looser again Everybody's different in this Yeah shoe turned out great guys I'm
Really happy with this um I double lace My my joints here but yeah I'm going to Clean the other shoe shortly and start Rocking these again all right so let's Check out these results pretty big Difference sometimes it's hard to to Tell until you actually clean your shoes How dirty they were obviously on camera You can see it most on the midsole here But that wayway I mean you can see even The richness of suede after we hit it With mink oil just brings that color Back the the brass bristle brush and the Soft brush bring the nap back really Does bring these close back to dead Stock again so I'm super pleased with How they turned out we achieved these Results using a combination of our three Brushes which are stiff medium and soft Brush in combination with our oxyclean Rejuvenator shoe cleaning foam which Turned out really nice on these we Finished it off by using a a medium Bristle brush right here just to try and Bring bring the nap back then we Upgraded to our brass bristle brush to Get it a little bit more uh nappy I Guess just a little bit more rigid and Then we finished it off with mink oil Here which brought back that color and You could really see it here I mean look At the look at the heel caps there Really did its job so I'm super pleased All the products we use today you can
